Magdalena Carrasco Makes Unusual Post-Win Maneuvers

Magdalena Carrasco has yet to be sworn in as East Side’s next council member, but she’s already positioning herself to be San Jose’s most enigmatic elected official. Just five months ago she scored a stunning upset of incumbent Xavier Campos, snaring more than 53 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff. Campos, with the help of ex-supervisor George Shirakawa Jr., narrowly defeated Carrasco four years ago, in part because of a fake/illegal mailer that cast her as a proud communist to Vietnamese voters. This time around she got redemption—thanks in part to low voter turnout, Metro’s sleuthing of Campos’ indiscretions and an independent expenditure committee that bashed Baby X to the tune of $100,000 in attack ads. But since that time, Carrasco has apparently turned her back on many of her supporters, including Mayor-elect Sam Liccardo. Sources tell Fly that Carrasco repeatedly rebuffed Liccardo’s attempts to set up a meeting in the final months of election season, even though he raised money for her campaign and endorsed her candidacy. Even stranger, in the weeks preceding the election she took an extended meeting with mayoral runner-up Dave Cortese—despite the fact that he endorsed her opponent, Campos. Cortese told voters as much at a forum on the campaign trail. But this isn’t the first time Carrasco has shifted allegiances. After receiving staunch support from Mayor Chuck Reed in 2010, she went out of her way this past year to say she never supported his pension reforms. The obvious conclusion would be she’s cozying back up to organized labor, but Carrasco told Fly this summer not to assume anything and that she hasn’t forgiven the attacks lobbed at her over several years. During the last two weeks, Fly went back and forth with Carrasco via text to arrange an interview, but after saying she’d be free for a quick phone call she ignored all further contact.

  1. Well, she has never been “anti-labor”, as most people in the labor movement has cast her. Same thing they did to Teresa Alvarado. And….Of course she ignored all further contact with Fly. It still amazes me anyone gives contact to Fly.

  2. plus, its creepy that you go around taking random pictures of people, which is precisely what this picture looks like you did.

        • Photo is captioned, “Via twitter” I’m guessing it’s from Maggies own twitter account.

Funny because months ago you were singing how great Xavier is. Now that Maggie is a political power broker, you run to her aid, tipping your fedora, and saying, “THANKS MLADY!” You are what my elders would call a “Fair weather friend” I’m sure Xavier is heartbroken that you no longer want to be his friend. By your standards, this is all in the name of “Classyness”, or sycophancy, which seems to be your specialty.

I’m sure Maggie is smart enough to figure you out. Tell me dear Elridge, do you always prematurely prejudice? Do you prematurely do other things? Seems to be your modus operandi.

    • Seems as thought the US Postal Service made or broke both elections. First, the Carrasco is a Commie piece, and then the Indian Gaming (not that we want you to know) sponsored piece for Magdelena of the six different addresses. If you are construction guy back Campos, but if you are a real estate agent, Magdelena will get you a lot of business, or UHaul. Has there been any documentation filed by Magdeleana for School Board. The question to ask is did Senator deLeon, the FBI’s favorite legislator, back Cortese or Liccardo? What is that building in the background of that picture, does Carrasco work there? Not according to her disclosure forms, the ones she turned in. Ps, isn’t Lopez’s group still on the hook for 30,000 dollars. It always seems to be a debt of thirty thousand with Carrasco, the candidate of the payday loan.

    • If you think Liccardo was the candidate of developers, you have a superficial understanding of South Bay politics. Cortese has always been the candidate for developers, from his time on the Council fighting Liccardo’s inclusionary housing ordinance right up to the election he just ran, in which one of his few stated positions was his opposition to a affordable housing impact fee — a fee Liccardo is currently pushing through the Council.

  3. Instead of chalking this up to Carasco “cozying back up to organized labor”, it is probably more a result of Magdalena seeing that Sam’s plan to fix public safety is a complete debacle.

Public Safety is clearly the #1 concern in Carasco’s district. Why would she align herself with the candidate who essentially ignored her constituents and continues to give baffling quotes to the media when asked about his plan to fix the problem?

Sam needs to quickly eat some crow here.. The new staffing projection which ” optimistically” puts police staffing around 950 officers by 2017 is a wake up call.

    • Steve Rogers,
Liccardo has been quoted as saying he wants to use technology while we wait to hire more Police. My question is, how is a computer or a camera going to stop a rapist, child molester, or a murder? It is just ridiculous.

          • Dad and I loved Robocop for it’s dark natured comedy. “Well I’m number 2 around here!” and other witful quips. The entire movie was an analogy, or documentary of high level corporate culture.

            Robo didn’t suffer from bad software, in fact, quite the opposite. His 3 prime directives;

First Directive: Serve the public trust
            Second Directive: Protect the innocent
            Third Directive: Uphold the law

It was the 4th, and secret prime directive that caused Robo to conflict with his first 3 directives which was basically, “You cannot arrest a senior employee of OCP”

Funny because we see the same analogy being played out in various ways in San Jose. NFL players getting free rides, and people getting a free pass, when they should be in jail.

          • Fun fact: Kurtwood Smith (the main villain in RoboCop) went to San Jose State…You’re Welcome.

      • Kathleen,

You’re right on point. Video is a great asset in solving many crimes, however there are hundreds, if not thousands of open cases where there is crystal clear video footage and the suspects are still roaming free.

You bring up a great point.. What about sex crimes, domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse etc? You can have all of the predictive software in the world and it will do no good in aiding with combating those types of crime.

Let’s take downtown San Jose for example.. It is widely known throughout the department, all the way up to the top, that there are nowhere near enough officers in downtown San Jose during the weekend nights. Anyone with an able body, half a brain and working eyes could go downtown on a Friday or Saturday night and see for themselves what chaos and near anarchy looks like.

Software and cameras are purely a reactive band aid where strict, proactive, enforcement is needed to solve the problem.

  4. Naïve question:

“Does Magdalena Carrasco have any core principles?”

How is it that it seems to be possible that people can believe anything about her?

“Enigmatic”? “Baffling quotes”? “[I]sn’t the first time Carrasco has shifted allegiances”?

    What’s real?

  5. Robocop’s 4th directive goes a long way toward explaining Bill Clinton:

    > “And so, in the name of all those who do the work and pay the taxes, raise the kids and play by the rules, in the name of the hard working Americans who make up our forgotten middle class . . . ”

Billy Bubb apparently knew about the secret “4th directive” just as Obama knew about the “57 states”.

  6. TODAY, AS WE DO MOST DAYS, WE WALK FROM THE ATHLETIC CLUB, THROUGH SAN JOSE STATE. WALKING THRU THE STAINLESS BIRD CAGE AND CITY HALL, THERE IS ALWAYS AN ENCAMPMENT OF HOMELESS. PERHAPS, 40 FOLKS. I’VE NAMED THIS SETTLEMENT AS GONZALVILLE. I CAN’T BUT FEEL THE SHAME OF THIS STAINLESS STEEL PIRAMID, AND THE NATIVES ARE GATHERED AT IT’S BASE. TONIGHT, WHERE WILL THESE PEOPLE GO, TO ESCPAE THE RAIN..
    REED, YOU ARE VERY DISAPOINTING.
TOMORROW, I WILL ONCE AGAIN TAKE MANY PHOTOS, ONLY THIS TIME I WILL BE ASKING THESE POOR SOULS HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT LIVING NEXT TO CAMELOT.
NOW I AM LEFT TO WALK THROUGH A CAMPUS WHERE MY LOVELY BROTHER NOW DECEASED TAUGH LANGUGE FOR 29 YEARS. HE SUED AN INSTITUTION THAT FAILED MANY BUT THE PRIVILLAGED.
NOW FROM THE GRIME OF RACISUM, RISES WANDA GINNER. SHE WAS QUOTED AS SAYING,,
“I CONTRIBUTE TO THIS UNIVERSITY, BECAUSE THESE LITTLE LATINAS DO NOT HAVE THE DNA TO BE SUCCESSFULL.
THIS IS THE UGLIEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! I SHALL NEVER FORGET THIS PAIN I FELT IN MY TRUSTING HEART. NEVER.!!!!
HOW MANY MORE GINNERS ARE IN THIS UNIVERSITY! HOW MANY MORE GINNERS ARE ENTRENCHED IN OUR CITY’S POLITICS AND BOARDS. IT IS TIME TO FIND THESE HORRIBLE ROLE MODELS AND BRING CHANGE TO OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. IT STARTS WITH SELF!!!.

    • > THIS IS THE UGLIEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! I SHALL NEVER FORGET THIS PAIN I FELT IN MY TRUSTING HEART. NEVER.!!!!

You’ve never been through an IRS audit, have you.

  7. All you have to know is her husband -Kevin Deleon. Magdalena and her husband are underhanded, corrupt and bad for San Jose. Here we go again eastside.
