Juror pay, cannabis cafes and psychedelics got the axe. Water rights, workers’ rights and renters’ rights were signed.

Striking workers would have been eligible to collect California unemployment benefits under a bill that Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed. He said the state can’t afford it. 

The state will find the money for increased benefits by removing a payroll tax shield on earnings above $145,600, effectively raising the contributions from higher earners.
