A California Legislature bill that would give as much as $25,000 from sports revenues each year to California student athletes has met stiff opposition from universities and the NCAA.

Many California colleges and universities define “first-generation college student” differently, creating a confusing situation for students to navigate.

Under his May budget plan, Gov. Gavin Newsom wants the UC and CSU to get more state student housing in 2023-24, but the universities would have to borrow the money through bonds. The state would pay the interest on the bonds annually.
