A tiny home project building bicycle-locker-sized enclosures in Santa Cruz morphed into Simply Shelter and expanded to San Jose.

The new evacuation centers will match unhoused residents with access to facilities and new supplies to accelerate their move from the streets into interim housing.

Across the state, some of the most vulnerable include the unhoused, whose numbers have increased by at least 22,500 in the last three years to about 172,000.  

The City of San José and American Red Cross announced Monday that its 24-hour emergency evacuation center at Seven Trees Community Center, 3590 Cas Drive, was at capacity. Starting at 4pm Jan. 9, the city will open an additional 24-hour emergency evacuation center at Camden Community Center, 3369 Union Ave.
