San Jose State trainer Scott Shaw was sentenced Tuesday to serve 24 months in federal prison for unlawfully touching female student athletes under the guise of providing medical treatment.

Scott Shaw's trial in U.S. District Court in San Jose on civil rights violations ended in a mistrial, but now he faces time in prison after pleading guilty.

The release of the report came on the day that jury selection began in the federal trial of former San Jose State athletic trainer Scott Shaw on federal civil rights charges, and also came less than a week after CSU trustees announced the appointment of a new chancellor, Mildred Garcia, effective Oct. 1.

Restorative justice is a controversial process that brings together the student who was harmed, the person who harmed them and the community to seek solutions.

Scott Shaw, 54, the former Director of Sports Medicine and athletic trainer at San Jose State University, was charged March 8 with civil rights violations for engaging in sexual misconduct with female student-athletes under the guise of treating them for their injuries

The next SJSU president will have to deal with lingering legal claims, and manage the wide-ranging reforms in its athletic programs required by the Justice Department settlement, not to mention dealing with issues of trust, reputation and accountability in the broader community.
