As the list of closed businesses continues to rise, experts say micro retail could provide a more economical alternative to large retail space.

The Knight Foundation announced Wednesday that it awarded more than $1 million in grants to 11 organizations in San Jose.

Of the 158 finalists named in the Knight Foundation's Cities Challenge, which divvies up $5 million among winning ideas, eight are from San Jose.
