Measure A will add a $79 tax per parcel on top of renewing an existing $49 tax to fund educational programs at Los Gatos High School and Saratoga High School.

The Sunday ballot count in the San Jose mayoral election showed Mahan with 103,241 votes,  or 50.89%. Chavez had 98,610 votes, or 49.11%.

In San José, despite a hotly contested mayoral contest, just 17 percent of the more than a half-million eligible voters had returned ballots one day before the election.

With outdated equipment slowing down vote tallies, Santa Clara County is talking about switching to all-mail elections to quicken the process.
