The DEA and U.S. attorney announced the arrests of Victor Nevarez, Juan Rivera Arzate and Pedro Gaona Salse, all of San Jose, and Adhemar Castaneda Becerril, of Gilroy.

A fatal drug overdose, drug use by an officer, DUI while off-duty and indecent exposure at a crime scene prompted promises of tough new oversight and training at the San Jose Police Department.

Police said the four San Jose residents were responsible for the brutal bloodbath outside the popular South Capitol Avenue restaurant that terrorized an East San Jose neighborhood. Two men were killed and four injured in the shooting, which remained unsolved until last week’s arrests.

Fatal fentanyl overdoses are on track to double this year in the South Bay compared to 2019, officials announced Friday. 

From Jan. 1 to May 8, at least 19 people died from fentanyl in this county. During the same period in 2019, seven died from the drug.

Santa Clara County has started to ramp up its public education campaign to combat opioid use and abuse and curb fatal overdoses.
