The county appeared to have been caught by surprise when informed three weeks ago of the DA's dumpster discoveries, releasing a statement Friday that didn't deny the allegations and affirming its commitment "to prevent future occurrences."

When San Jose police officers with the Metro and Violent Crimes Enforcement Teams served a fentanyl-related search warrant at an unhoused encampment in south San Jose on Sunday, they discovered a big haul of cash and illegal drugs. Two primary suspects were taken into custody nearby and the subsequent search yielded two firearms, narcotics for sale, drug paraphernalia, and over $17,000 in cash, according to police. Both suspects had been prohibited from owning firearms because of prior criminal records, police said.

California is undertaking an ambitious effort to improve mental health, while controversy surrounds how to address the fentanyl crisis.

The DA task force had been focusing on disarming people ordered by the court to not have guns, but this was the first seizure of a weapons arsenal.

Ian Parrish, 28, pleaded guilty in August to selling four pills to a person at a bar in Fremont the previous year, two of which were counterfeit "M30" pills designed to look like Percocet but contained fentanyl. TThe man died less than 30 minutes later.

The mother of the infant, who was not at home when the baby died, herself succumbed to an overdose last month.

Santa Clara County is getting a piece of a national, multibillion-dollar opioid settlement against drug manufacturers, distributors and retailers for their role in creating a state and national crisis.

Prosecutors accused Ian Edward Parrish, 28, of San Jose, of selling two counterfeit Percocet pills to an individual in a bar in Fremont that were laced with fentanyl. The individual who bought the pills consumed one and shortly thereafter died of an overdose.

To combat the presence of fentanyl in the correctional facility, Jonsen said he has taken “extraordinary” measures, including conducting multiple facility searches, more frequent welfare checks and numerous K-9 searches.  

Police said Simon Armendariz used monikers such as “Risky” and “Madman” to sell the drugs to 15-year-olds in various locations throughout downtown Los Gatos, including the parking lot of Los Gatos High School or a nearby church.

Police Chief Anthony Mata and Assistant Chief Paul Joseph were flagged down by the victim's girlfriend while driving on Coleman Avenue.
