Nearly a year ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom promised to deploy 1,200 tiny homes to help shelter the state’s growing population of homeless residents. Now, the state has chosen who will build those tiny homes and what they will look like — but there’s still no word on when people will be able to move in.

California cities of every size lack shelter beds for the state’s growing homeless population. A new bill would force local governments to do more, and punish cities that don’t plan housing for unhoused residents.

At San Jose State University, roughly 13 percent or more than 4,000 students experience homelessness within a year, according to a 2019 California State University report.

Proposals announced Wednesday by San Jose city leaders would triple emergency housing units to 1,000, quadruple San José Bridge jobs, and reduce illegal dumping.
