Increasing CSU tuition up to $8,000 over a five-year period by 2030 might not be enough to cover the system's spending, as faculty press for 12% pay increases.

Under his May budget plan, Gov. Gavin Newsom wants the UC and CSU to get more state student housing in 2023-24, but the universities would have to borrow the money through bonds. The state would pay the interest on the bonds annually.

The resignation of Sonoma State University President Judy Sakaki is the third in six months in the CSU system, where at least eight campuses are roiling with sexual misconduct controversies.

The next SJSU president will have to deal with lingering legal claims, and manage the wide-ranging reforms in its athletic programs required by the Justice Department settlement, not to mention dealing with issues of trust, reputation and accountability in the broader community.

State education officials say the steep decline in matriculation may threaten viability of California community colleges.
