Jonsen's 7,163-vote margin, with approximately 19,000 ballots outstanding, meant that Jensen would need nearly 70% of the remaining ballots to edge past Jonsen. As of 1pm today, Jensen had not conceded the race.

After eight days of counting, Jonsen led by 1.44 percentage points. That’s less than half the margin Jonsen had on Election Day, when 49% of votes had been counted.

San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Nancy Fineman on Wednesday afternoon rejected a motion from defense lawyers that the corruption trial of Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith should be dismissed because of Smith's resignation Monday.

Meanwhile, the latest San Jose Inside Power Poll finds that voters don’t much care about the fate of the former city hall.

Anh Colton, 48, of Cupertino, has had no law enforcement experience in the last five years. California law requires that candidates for sheriff have at least one year of law enforcement experience within the last five years. 

The approximately 25,000 ballots counted by the Registrar of Voters Elections Division June 9 didn’t change any trends or flip any projected outcomes, but did suggest the early, expected outcomes are more likely to hold.

With 33.6% – 56,011 votes – of nearly 167,000 votes reported June 8 at 5pm, Jonsen led retired sheriff’s captain Kevin Jensen, who had the support of 30.5% – 50,951 – of the votes.
