The April 8 San José District 3 Special Election is just 15 days away and today, March 24, is the deadline for District 3 residents to register to vote and receive a vote by mail ballot.
New voter registrations can be completed through the Secretary of State's website.
Those who miss the deadline can still participate in the election, but they must register in-person and vote on the same day at the Registrar of Voters’ Office, 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2, or at any vote center starting March 29.
The special election is being conducted to fill the District 3 vacancy. If no candidate receives a simple majority of the votes, a Special Runoff Election will be held on June 24.
The 3rd District candidates are:
- Gabby Chavez-Lopez, executive director, Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley
- Philip Dolan, knife sharpener salesman
- Adam Duran, retired Santa Clara County sheriff's lieutenant
- Matthew Quevedo, deputy chief of staff San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan
- Irene Smith, financial anaylst
- Anthony Tordillos, chair of San Jose Planning Commission
- Tyrone Wade, retired family counselor
Only voters registered in the City of San José District 3 are eligible to vote in this election. Voters unsure of their eligibility may look up their district by entering their residential address into the ROV’s district finder tool at.
“Your vote counts, whether it’s a federal election or a local election,” said Matt Moreles, Acting Registrar of Voters. “We encourage all eligible residents to register before today’s deadline to ensure you receive your Vote by Mail ballot in time for Election Day."
There are three vote centers for this special election within District 3. Two vote centers will be open for voting in person beginning March 29 and a third vote center will be added beginning April 5 through Election Day.
Vote-by-mail packets containing the official ballot were mailed out to all active registered voters earlier this month. Ballots may be returned by mail, at any official drop box, in-person at the Registrar of Voters’ Office or at any vote center. Visit the Registrar of Voters for official drop box and vote center locations.
