OMG: Don’t Text, Drive and Eat

The war on texting and driving has found an unlikely ally: Joey Chestnut, the San Jose resident of competitive eating fame. On Wednesday, Chestnut will link arms with AT&T officials at City Hall and stress the importance of drivers keeping their eyes on the road and hands at 10 and 2. LOL.

While it would make sense to have anti-texting and driving State Senator Joe Simitian attend the event, that’s obviously not a name that’s going to move the needle.

Chestnut first ate his way into our hearts on July 4, 2007, when he bested six-time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. Chestnut consumed a then-world record 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. He has since won the event six years running.

The company’s publicity push is centered around the slogan #itcanwait, which is in no way ironic considering most people will be forced to text the slogan while being encouraged by a man who’s claim to fame is shoving wieners down his throat as fast as humanly possible.
