Campos Appointed Speaker Pro Tempore

Nora Campos took a considerable step up in stature Wednesday when State Assembly Speaker John Pérez (D-Los Angeles) unveiled his list of new appointments for leadership and committee chair positions. Campos (D-San Jose), who just completed her freshman term in the Assembly after serving two terms on the San Jose City Council, was appointed speaker pro tempore. She will serve as assistant speaker pro tempore from Aug. 10 through Sept. 1, before inheriting Fiona Ma’s position and dropping the “assistant” title.

“I’m pleased to announce the members of our talented new leadership team and new committee chair assignments,” Pérez said in a news release. “This group represents a diverse cross-section of California and offers an incredible amount of knowledge and expertise on the important issues impacting our state.”

Campos, who will now stand in for Speaker Pérez if he is unavailable, was also appointed Wednesday to the position of vice chair of the Assembly Local Government Committee, which could be seen as a step up after chairing the Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media Committee.

Campos’ Sacramento office would not comment on her selection for speaker pro tempore and referred calls to Silicon Valley political consultant Rolando Bonilla. A message with Bonilla has yet to be returned.

  1. Hope she does well. She a great asset in the Assembly. By the way, political season is starting and it’s time to focus on the November election. Obama is definitely a shoe in so we should focus on the other issues that are important. To wit, prop 32. Vote NO on proposition 32. This proposition is designed to increase the influence of big money such as the Koch brothers and Wall Street hedge fund managers and hurt working families. This proposition was written and supported by the Republican party in California. Vote NO on prop 32.

  2. Ms. Campos says, “…and look forward to working hard to overcome the challenges that lie just ahead for the state of California, from needed pension reform to protecting critical funding for California’s public schools.”

I’ve been hearing this radio ad on the state tax measures:

Ms. Campos had better give pension reform more than lip service, or Brown’s tax proposal will fail.

Democrats can continue to get reelected by pretending to be serious about pension reform.  The problem is that they won’t get any tax proposals passed unless they get serious about real reform.
