Endorsement: Maya Esparza for San Jose City Council

Two interesting candidates are vying to represent District 7, one of the city’s most dynamic collection of neighborhoods. The district confronts challenges ranging from homeless encampments and city neglect to opportunities for large developments that will reshape its landscape.

Outspoken attorney Tam Nguyen would stir things up. And while that’s not always a bad thing, we prefer the steady hand of Maya Esparza.

She has spent a lifetime in the communities she would represent, and much of her career has been spent working for socially relevant non-profits. We believe that the combination of skills and knowledge that Esparza would bring to the City Council would serve residents of District 7 well.

So what the hell are we supposed to conclude from this?

That she can’t find and hold a job in the “for profit” economy where people pay for and want to see real results?

That she’s cashing in on the non-profit “gravy train” like the obscenely over-compensated ($225,000) do-gooder (and SJI contributor) Sparky Harlan?

I’ve spent much of my blogging career as a socially relevant blogger. Is SJI going to endorse me for something good?

Deputy Mayor for Expense Accounts and Smoking Hot Female Interns?
