Three City Races Still Undecided in Santa Clara County

Three city races in Santa Clara County remained undecided late Wednesday, after a topsy-turvy week.

The biggest surprise has been in Gilroy, where first-term Mayor Marie Blankley fell farther behind Wednesday as ballot-counting headed to the final days.

Blankley held a 227-vote lead election night over challenger Greg Bozzo. Five days later, on Nov. 10, as the counting of mail ballots continued, that margin dwindled to just 12 votes.

The next day, she lost the lead, and Bozzo has widened it each day since.

As of 4:45pm Wednesday, Bozz had tallied 10,673 votes, according to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters daily report.

Bozzo, owner of a Gilroy landscaping company, was leading Blankley by 165 votes Wednesday, up from a 152-vote margin on Nov. 12, and his first lead, 50 votes, on Nov. 11.

County election officials said 94% of ballots countywide had been counted as of Wednesday evening.

Blankley, an accountant, was first elected mayor in 2020, after serving one term on the city council. As of 11am today, she has not conceded the election.

Both candidates grew up in Gilroy.

Also in the South County, Morgan Hill Mayor Mark Turner easily won re-election, defeating challenger and City Councilmember Yvonne Martinez Beltran, 11,899 to 8,407.

In Sunnyvale, Larry Klein, the city’s first directly-elected mayor in 2020, also easily won re-election, defeating Russ Melton 33,127 to 12,423.

Cupertino and Palo Alto

City council races in Cupertino and Palo Alto were the only remaining local council elections that were too close to call as of Nov. 13.

In Cupertino, where incumbent Councilmember Kitty Moore easily won reelection, with 9,974 votes, the battle for the second at-large council seat has been a seesaw all week, with Rod Sinks and Ray Wang trading leads.

As of 4:45pm Wednesday, Wang led Sinks by 20 votes, 7,374 to 7,354, after Sinks had led for two days, up 44 votes on Nov. 11, and then clinging to a 13-vote lead on Nov. 12.

In Palo Alto, where citizens also elect their council members in citywide voting, candidates held solid leads for three seats, while the fourth remained a cliffhanger late Wednesday.

Incumbent Councilmembers Greer Stone and Pat Burt appeared headed to re-election, with 14,049 and 11,354 votes, respectively. Newcomer George Lu also is headed to the council, with 12,819 votes.

Keith Reckdahl continued to hold on to his lead over Dona Summa, which has grown slightly each day in the past week. Reckdahl led by 15 votes on Nov. 11, 30 votes on Nov. 12 and 47 votes late Wednesday, with 11,078 to 11,031.

County election officials expect another ballot-count update at 5pm today.
