We spent the weekend converting San Jose Inside over to a new server. Thanks Edgar, Adrian, Joel and Ivan for your hard work in getting the new site up.
Astute San Jose Inside readers will notice a few subtle changes. A wider screen, a cleaner interface, larger headlines, more contributors and a cartoon on the front page. Otherwise, it’s pretty much the same San Jose Inside, moved over to a faster, more robust server that can accommodate our future growth.
If any comments posted over the weekend were lost in the transition, please repost them, and if you catch any errors or have any feedback on the new look, please feel free to post your thoughts or email me.
Looks nice. Is the ommission of the area that indicates new posts were added intentional?
Looks good Jack. But what’s up with all the white space at the top?
Please consider using a larger font.
Good job Jack!
Very slick. Good work.
I like your new style. Thanks for giving up your weekend to do this task.
One thing that has been on my mind for a while is whether there is a better way to index the old Blogs, other than having to go through, at this time, 144 pages of Blogs.
Some sites have a search feature for this task. How that is implemented I do not know, but even that is not perfect, since it assumes you have an idea of what to search.
In regard to just seeing past blogs maybe something similar to your current listing of Blogs by each author would work. However, just list the Blog title, and not any of the text. That would allow a large number of Blogs to be listed on a single page.
Anyway, thanks for allowing local residents to get their views on various subjects out into the open.
Looks sharp and professional. Glad to see DeCinzo. Nice going!
Having to scroll down past all the white space at the top in order to get to the content is annoying. Other than that the changes seem fine.
#4 Buzzard Eye: Presuming you use Internet Explorer, hold down your Ctrl key, then press the + key a few times. You’ll notice the font size increases!
Thanks to everyone for their posts here. Keep letting us know what problems you are experiencing. It helps the technical staff with their adjustments.
Many of the problems being experienced by individual users (white space, etc.) are due to your browsers and/or providers. I am told these will work themselves out over the next few days. I had similar problems and found by closing out Internet Explorer, siginging off, exiting, and then signing back on and reloading the browser, SJI came up fine.
Larger fot for the comment section. Yes i know how to change my font size, but to do that for each visit is gonna get annoying.
At work using XP and the version of IE that has tabs, the site looks okay. At home using NT and IE 6 there is a large void at the top, and each blog and replies are shifted to the left border, versus being centered.
As others have noted, if the font were one size larger it would be more readable.
Jack,
Looks great!
I just hope SJI doesn’t get taken over by the Metro or other medias you are working with. That would be a real shame~
#13 Kathleen, since Metro has been involved, there have been twice as many articles (frequently two a day), a cartoon added and a large increase in the number of user posts.
All the changes have added to SJI and built on its strengths, nothing more.
#14- We’ll have to wait and see. I’ve seen this kind of thing happen before.
Unfortunately, I can’t get rid of the large void at the top, and each blog and replies are shifted to the left border, versus being centered. Maybe you could tweak the formatting.

Thanks for letting us know.
The site looks fine on our PCs and Macs here. The problem may be with your browser. Do you have the latest version of IE, Windows XP or Vista, etc? I know that some people with an older OS and browser are experiencing similar problems.
I am not a techie (as you can tell) but I will pass on your problem to our technical staff and see if there is any other possibility.
Do you have the latest version of IE, Windows XP or Vista, etc?
That isn’t a good solution. It is unrealistic to expect people to upgrade just to read SJI. Maybe the new design is using some non-standard HTML.
Jack, I’m running IE6 on windows XP [version 5.1.2600]

Thanks for your computer info. I received the following about your problem from our tech man Edgar:
The site does not work with IE 6.0 or below. He should upgrade to 7.0. or use Firefox. This is more related to the platform we are using.
I think it’s very easy to download the latest version of IE from the Microsoft site. Please let me know if that fixes your problem.
Jack,
You need better tech-support. There is no reason why it should not work with IE6. This site is primarily text, and there is no need to be using any non-standard HTML.
Otherwise, you need to put a banner at the top that tells everyone they need to upgrade to IE7, and Windows XP, just to read SJI.
CNN, and any other major sites, do not have any problem with IE6.
RE Internet Explorer 6
There is an effort being made to support IE 6 for the new site. I’ll update you on this as soon as I can.
I think that the IE6 problem has been fixed.
I am happy to report that we are now IE 6 compatible and text size has been increased. My thanks to those of you who brought these matters to our attention.
#7 Not a Novice
I am looking into adding a search function in the near future. I would find it very useful myself. Thanks for your suggestion.
Now that we can see the revised site as intended, I can say that it looks much better. I don’t have a problem with the Metro tie-in, either. Speaking of Metro, has anybody been to El Tule, the Mexican place they reviewed last week?
