Suspect in 2013 San Jose Murder Found in Mexico, Returned to U.S. to Face Charges

More than 12 years after a San Jose woman died of multiple stab wounds, her alleged assailant was located by INTERPOL in Mexico. Eight months later he was extradited to the U.S. to face a murder charge.

San Jose detectives had identified Juan Ramirez as the man who fatally stabbed the woman, who died at a local hospital after the attack in the afternoon of March 22, 2013, in the 900 block of North First Street.

After an investigation yielded the identity of her alleged attacker, detectives learned that he had fled to Mexico.

On July 16, 2024, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) successfully apprehended Ramirez and took him into custody in Mexico to await extradition to the United States. Last Friday, Ramirez, now 37, was extradited from Mexico to California, escorted by U.S. Marshals, and was subsequently booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.

“The San José Police Department will pursue all suspects who flee from justice, especially someone as violent and dangerous as Juan Ramirez,” said San Jose Chief of Police Paul Joseph in a statement. “Our victim passed away twelve years ago, but she was never forgotten. Since the day she was murdered, our homicide detectives worked relentlessly to find the suspect. Now we have Ramirez back in San José, ready to be held accountable for this atrocious killing.”
