A nonprofit dedicated to helping families of fallen law enforcement will hold a fundraiser for San Jose police Officer Michael Katherman’s wife and children.
Katherman, a veteran motorcycle cop, became the San Jose Police Department’s 13th line-of-duty death when a minivan struck him at a North Side intersection earlier this month. The 12th was Officer Michael Johnson, who died in March 2015 when a gunman fatally shot him during a standoff.
The fundraiser, hosted by Police and Fire: The Fallen Heroes, takes place Tuesday at Famous Dave’s Barbecue. All proceeds that day will go to the Katherman family.
Organizers want attendees to focus on the good Katherman did for the community and the happiness he gave to his family.
Last week more than a thousand police officers and members of the public flocked to the SAP Center for a public memorial. Katherman’s colleagues and family reminisced about his 11 years on the force, his love for his wife and children and his Christian faith.
