News In Review: Going For A Ride

Another thought-provoking cartoon from DeCinzo.

How does he come up with these outrageous ideas?

In the Willow Glen Resident, Mayra Flores De Marcotte tells us about some of the good work people in Willow Glen are doing to help those hurt or displaced by Hurricane Katrina.  In the Mercury, Brandon Bailey shares his memories of the aftermath of the storm.

More happily, Mayra also tells us about the move to a new location for the Willow Glen Farmers’ Market.

In mayoral race news, Scott Herhold covers the who knew what when war of words being fought between Chuck Reed and Cindy Chazvez.  Meanwhile, Deborah Lohse reports the struggle between the Mayor and Dave Cortese over how and when to evaluate City Manager Del Borgsdorf.

Internal Affairs reports on the Mayor returning some donations.

Finally, the good news of the week from the City Council: Janice Rombeck writes that they’ve decided to keep the 4th street parking garage free on nights and weekends… for now.

  1. The checks keep rolling in…  How much staff time is needed to process all the ‘gifts’ our mayor receives?  Do they know about direct deposit?  smile

“One of the next things he did was to return a total of $1,500 he had received from the Teamster’s and the president of California Waste Solutions, documents filed in recent weeks reveal.

Two groups affiliated with the Teamster’s—the Bay Area Union Labor Party and Teamster’s Local Union No. 665—were among the dozens of donors giving $500 apiece to Gonzales’ “office holder account’’ at an April 20 fundraiser breakfast at the San Jose Hyatt.

A couple of weeks earlier, David T. Duong, president of California Waste Solutions, had also given $500 to the account, which each council member has for travel and other expenses.”

    The funniest line?
“But it seems the mayor didn’t explain his touchy situation to the donors. Thursday, Teamster’s No. 665 bookkeeper Lois Kelly said, “I’m still holding the check, because I don’t know why they returned it.’’”

A shocking precedent indeed – the mayor declining a check from special interests.

  2. Kevin:  Thanks for publishing DeCinzo’s cartoon from The Willow Glen Resident.  I was hoping you would.  He’s the best @ local stuff.

Maybe we could get him to do a cartoon to accompany J-MacIV’s weekly satires.

  3. The Mercury News editorial board is disappointed Chuck Reed’s employer disclosure proposal was defeated 9-2.  The proposal would require employers to report on how much time their employees spent working on the clock to help a candidate in city elections.

Today’s editorial closes with “if voters and community groups think this is a problem, they should raise the issue at every opportunity in next year’s campaigns. We certainly intend to.”

What about the most recent election in district 7?  I do not recall reading any editorial prior to the election that discussed the candidates’ approaches to addressing the problems plaguing city hall.

  4. Today’s Merc reports that the “City Manager” is putting some disctance between himself and Ronzales.  Check out the number of times that the San Jose Rules Committee uses the word “process” as they reject Cortese’s proposal to ask hard questions of Borgsdorf during a special closed session meeting. The FEMA-like delays on this issue are amazing.

Here’s the video link for the Rules Committee meeting of Sept 21.:

  5. It’s no surprise Borgsdorff is putting distance between himself and Gonzales.
The real surprise is that most of the Council hasn’t done the same.
    Does he have Polaroids?

  6. The Rules Committee should be renamed the Fools Committee. The lack of leadership is appalling. How does Cindy expect to be taken seriously as a candidate for Mayor when we can’t even take her seriously as a Councilmember? Her inability to deal with this issue is a disgrace. The other members who refused to act on this are already an embarrasment and this just further solidifies that title.
Things are so bad that even Borgsdorf is distancing himself from the stench of the Mayor’s office. It must be bad when he is willing to bite the only hand that feeds him since he never would be here if it weren’t for Gonzo’s focus to hire the best yes-man he could find. The fact that not every member of the Council is supporting Cortese in wanting to ask tough questions just shows (again) what a spineless Council we continue to have.
The for change is long past due.
