Less Means More

Let me get this straight…San Jose voters are being asked to support Measures J and K under the guise of lowering San Jose’s tax rates?

Please.

The campaign committee for the two ballot measures calls itself “Taxpayers for lower San Jose tax rates.” But isn’t it the case that the 9-1-1 fee and the telephone tax are scheduled to expire? What sort of disingenuous rhetoric is this…we’re working to LOWER San Jose taxes?

Give me a break. Why not just come out with it and level with the people? “If we don’t extend these fees and taxes, the City of San Jose will be up the proverbial creek without a paddle.” Or, how about, “If we don’t extend these fees and taxes, the city will be another $50 million in the hole next year…libraries will be closed five days a week, and a third of our city parks will be auctioned off to developers?”

Representing an extension of city taxes and fees that are set to expire as some sort of “value,” is more than a stretch. Frankly, it borders on propaganda.
