Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, will stop by San Jose on Tuesday to highlight affordable housing efforts and help out with a community service project at Lake Cunningham Park.

The Carters, who are being hosted by San Jose Councilmember Rose Herrera, want to bring attention to affordable housing while also revitalizing the San Jose park. Volunteers will be working on housing and community improvement projects, including refurbishment of existing shade structures by the lake.

“I am honored to partner with President and Mrs. Carter on this project at our park, which serves half-a-million guests annually,” Herrera said. “These shade structures, originally built in the 1970s, are in poor shape and weather beaten. Thanks to our partnership with the Carters and the wonderful Carter Work Project volunteers, all Lake Cunningham visitors can benefit from this effort.”

Anyone interested in helping out Tuesday should pre-register with Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley. There is a fundraising component for volunteers.

Carter, who arrived in the Bay Area on Sunday, picked the Lake Cunningham neighborhood because of a partnership with the city and Habitat for Humanity. Additional construction projects this week include home repairs and renovations in City Council districts 5, 7 and 8.
