San Jose Congressman Sam Liccardo is one of just nine Democrats to publicly call for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
A citizens’ group, “Operation Anti-King,” formed in early April said it is recruiting voters in every House district to press for Trump’s impeachment.
The group’s first action was to send emails to each member of Congress, polling support for impeachment of the President.
The group received 425 “No Comment” responses, two Republican No responses and nine Democrats saying “Yes,” including Liccardo, and: Reps. Al Green of Texas, Suzanne Bonamici and Maxine Dexter of Oregon, Maxine Waters of California, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Shri Thanedar of Michigan, Hank Johnson of Georgia and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.
One co-founder Gabe Garbowit, former staff aide for Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.); the other is Keira Havens, of Colorado, an Air Force veteran, bioscientist and blogger.
In a statement to this group, Dexter wrote: “Donald Trump’s cruel, chaotic, and unlawful actions have put our democracy at risk. ... I will not stand by while our democracy is eroded. I support impeachment because no one is above the law.” Bonamici likewise affirmed her support because Trump is “violating the Constitutional rights of people in this country and ignoring the rule of law.”
Under the House’s Rule IX, impeachment is a “question of the privileges of the House” and must be voted on within two legislative days.
House Speaker Mike Johnson could intervene with his own rules resolution, as he has on other matters. But this also requires a vote of the full House, which then effectively becomes the same thing. Thus, any individual representative has the ability to make all the others, in both parties, take a position.
The “anti-king” said the grounds for impeachment include: “Usurping the power of the purse, imposing massive tax hikes, creating illegal pseudo-offices, attacks on the First Amendment, threatening opponents, obstructing the courts, flagrant bribery, threatening to invade allies, disappearing people to a foreign torture camp.”
The group insists Trump “has demonstrated his character is marked by every act which may define a tyrant.”
Liccardo virtue-signaling as a back-bencher? Who woulda thunk?
He knows something about tyranny, though. He committed crimes against humanity under the Nuremberg Code with his Covid vax mandate and booster mandate while San Jose mayor.
