Multiple injuries and multiple fatalities were reported today in an early morning mass shooting by a lone gunman at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority maintenance yard on Younger Ave. in San Jose.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office reported at 8:08am via Twitter that “shooter is down” in the incident Wednesday morning.
The Sheriff's Office wrote on Twitter at 7:12am about a response to “an active shooter investigation in the area of 100 W. Younger Ave.,” located near the sheriff’s headquarters. The VTA said the investigation is in the area of its Guadalupe maintenance yard. This post will be updated as details become available.
There were “multiple injuries and multiple fatalities, ” according to a San Jose Police Department spokesperson.
Early reports said shots were fired at a VTA light rail vehicle.
“The shooter is no longer a threat, and the facility has been evacuated,” Mayor Sam Liccardo posted.
VTA subsequently confirmed that the active shooting occurred around 6:45am, multiple casualties occurred, employees were evacuated and the suspect is deceased.
VTA service has not been impacted, the agency said, since trains were in service before incident.
