It’s Official: Here’s Who Qualified for South Bay’s Fall Ballot

The candidate list for the Nov. 3 election has been finalized.

Offices up for election are council seats in San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Palo Alto, Saratoga and Sunnyvale. Also on the ballot—in addition to contests for U.S. president and a host of national and state seats—is a race for an open spot on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and another in the 15th State Senate District.

The qualifying period for the offices ended Aug. 7.

In San Jose, two council incumbents face challengers. District 4 Councilman Lan Diep is vying for a second term against Berryessa Union School District trustee David Cohen. In District 6, Councilwoman Dev Davis is up against Green Party challenger Jake Tonkel.

Four council seats are on the ballot in Santa Clara, which is going on its second election under its newly created district system. In District 1, Councilwoman Kathy Watanabe is defending her incumbency against Harbir Bhatia. In D4, incumbent Teresa O’Neil faces Kevin Nara Park. In D5, it’s Suds Jain against Bob O’Keefe. D5 drew a few candidates: Robert Mezzetti, Anthony Becker and Gautam Barve.

Sunnyvale will vote for its first directly elected mayor—a position that was previously filled by council appointment. In the running for the city’s top job is current Mayor Larry Klein as well as Nancy Smith and Michael Goldman.

Meanwhile, Hina Siddiqui, Alysa Cisneros and Josh Grossman are running for Sunnyvale’s D2 while Russ Melton and Paul Lesevic are vying for the D4 seat. D6 candidates are Leia Mehlman, Omar Din and Charlotte Thornton.

In Campbell, D1 Councilwoman Susan Landry is up against Anne Souza while Sergio Lopez and Carol Hoffman are vying for an open seat in D2.

Five candidates are running for Cupertino council: Joseph Fruen, Hung Wei, Kitty Moore, Charlene Shulein Lee and Steven Scharf.

Milpitas Mayor Rich Tran is running for another term against Voltair Montemayor and Peter McHugh. For council there are seven candidates—two of whom are incumbents Bob Nuñez and Anthony Phan: namely, Evelyn Chua, Robert Marini, Suraj Viswanathan, Julian Jose Nool Hilario Jr. and Tiffany Vuong.

Running for Mountain View council are incumbents Margaret Abe-Koga and Lisa Matichak against Sally Lieber, Paul Roales, John Lashlee, Pat Showalter, Jose Gutierrez, Alex Nunez and Lenny Siegel.

The Palo Alto council race drew 10 contenders this election cycle: Greer Stone, Steven Lee, Ajit Varma, Rebecca Eisenberg, Lydia Kou, Cari Templeton, Raven Malone, Patrick Burt, Ed Lauing and Greg Lin Tanaka.

Saratoga voters will see six names on the ballot for council: Renee Paquier, Belal Aftab, Kookie Fitzsimmons, John Fitzpatrick, Tina Walia and Doug Case.

In Santa Clara County, Kansen Chu and Otto Lee will both vie for the District 3 seat, which is being vacated by termed-out county supervisor, Dave Cortese.

  1. The most intriguing issue or set of issues In Santa Clara is how mega develoment is changing the town.

    Two of the dumbest ideas were building a tower of babel near yahoo and take the railroad center and build thousands of units surrounding the downtown which is so moronic it amazing someone is being paid to turn our old quad from treasure to trash.

  2. I’ll make it easy for everyone so they can skip the all off the election blah blah blah and focus on more important things: there’s a box, a name next to it, then the word “incumbent.” Go ahead and just skip that box, and check any of the other boxes except that one.
