Santa Clara County has mailed out more than 8,000 ballots for the June primary election to military and overseas voters.
Registrars of voters are legally required to send mail-in ballots to U.S. voters in the military and others who live abroad, local officials explained in a press statement last week. Military and overseas ballots are mailed anywhere from 45 days to two months before an election, while local ballots go out starting 29 days in advance.
To count for the June 5 primary, mailed ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and must reach the county’s Registrar of Voters (ROV) no later than June 8.
Military and overseas voters have to personally sign the return envelope so that their signature can be compared to the one on their voter registration record, officials said. While military and overseas ballots can’t be submitted online, they can be returned via snail mail or fax.
“There is no more important action in a democracy than voting,” Santa Clara County ROV Shannon Bushey said. “By mailing ballots early to the men and women serving and living abroad, we are safeguarding their right to vote.”
May 21 is the final day to register to vote in the June primary. Click here for more information about voter registration.
The early voting period ensures our military and overseas voters have timely access to their ballots,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder. Wow!
