While nonprofits throughout San Jose are struggling to survive, at least one cultural organization received a much needed boost, when the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation of Miami, Florida, announced that it would be granting $975,000 to ZER01: The Art and Technology Network, producers of the 01SJ biennial, which focuses on inspiring creativity at the intersection of art, technology and digital culture. The festival, which attracted more than 65,000 visitors in its first year, highlighted the works of more than 350 artists from over 40 countries. The next biennial is scheduled for mid-September, 2010. Between biennials, ZER01 nurtures Silicon Valley’s cultural health with events such as the June 2009 SubZERO Festival. Produced in partnership with the SoFA District, the street festival drew 10,000 people to downtown.
This is great news! Maybe it would get some of the local empty suits and talking heads to recognize that the arts are something to invest in. And when I say the arts, I mean real arts, not just an excuse to bring in your cronies their “aztec dancers”.. but I digress.
Why single out “Aztec Dancers”? Why not German Folk Dancers or Belly Dancers? Aztec Dancing happens to be a serious art. Id love to see you try it. Also, who are these “cronies” you speak of?
