  1. John,

    Your best article yet!

How come no mention made about the pride of San Jose-Joey Chestnut.  Finally San Jose can claim to be tops in something…

  2. In light of the recent nightclub problems with drunk patrons and police, does anyone know how the Americas Festival went over the last few days? I assume there was lots of drinking and celebrating with thousands of people…were there any problems “sweeping” those people out of town at “close?”

  3. Koybayashi was robbed! The contest organizers inadvertently put 5 bratwursts in his hot dog stack which, in culinary circles, is equvilant to 10 hot dogs. Kobayashi won! He was robbed!

  4. Illegal means against the law.

Fireworks are prohibited from being used by private individuals in Santa Clara County. This last Fourth of July was ‘celebrated’ by a great number of people engaged in illegal activities.

Illegal imigration is called that because the people are not following the procedures for LEGAL entry into the USA.

Robbing a bank is illegal, should it be given a nod and a wink too?

When will society either agree to follow the laws, or amend them to the new “accepted” norms?

  5. Dear San Jose:

I can’t abide that hot dog eating contest.  The event should not be held on the Fourth of July, and they should move the venue to Darfur, or some other place where kids are starving to death.  What sort of person actually tunes into that thing?

It’s amazing…the Mercury News will devote a full coverage, front page story on the hot dog contest, but they won’t report on the costs of the rotunda!  (perhaps it’s too much trouble).

  6. San Jose is the capital of silicon valley, the tenth largest city in the country, the safest large city in the nation and home to Nathan’s hot-dog-eating champion.

You are safe.  You are safe.  You are safe.

  7. Bush v. Clinton – The Pardon Debate

The actions of President Bush and former President Clinton indicate the state of politics in this country.  The debate should not focus around whether or not Bush’s pardons were better or worse or equal to what Clinton did in office.  The focus should be on the fact that they are both dead wrong in their actions.

They each abused the discretionary power of the president for their own personal purposes.  Their lack of ethics, their lack of leadership, their lack of morals and their completely transparent use of presidential power to help their friends is simply atrocious.  It is not a Republican or a Democratic issue, it is one of right and wrong.

When the leader of the United States is showing the citizens of the United States just how easy it is to get away with abuse in a higher office, why should anyone be surprised when it happens in a lower office (like our past mayor of San Jose).

This is really a sad state of affairs and a very sad commentary on the state of our country.

People are also saying it is a poor reflection on our legal system.  I will disagree with that comment.  The legal system convicted Libby.  The Judge sentenced him as he was supposed to do.  It was the abuse of the presidential powers that basically set him free.  Oh yes, his sentence was not a pardon, it was a commutation.  My answer to that is, now many days did he spend in jail.  It was the equivalent of a pardon.  The felon basically gets away with the crime because of the President.

Sometimes I feel like I live in a 3rd world country.

  8. I hope President Bush pardons John Michael O’Connor.  From reviewing previous posts, it seems Mr. O’Connor assassinated the character of former Mayor Gonzales.  I’m guessing Mr. O’Connor fled to Costa Rica so he would not be indicted by the Santa Clara County Grand Jury.  It is hoped he will be pardoned and then return to America.  Or he could be extradited back to America to face a criminal trial and then receive a thirty-year prison sentence.

  9. Our beloved family dog Davis…may you rest in peace for eternity; I will miss you dearly my canine brother.

Hillary has some nerve?!!!  3,600 deceased American soldiers care to differ.

Has anyone noticed that San Jose’s news station is slowly becoming another San Francisco news station?  Once KNTV 11 became an NBC affiliate, it wasted no time catering to Frisco just like KRON, KPIX, KTVU, etc.  Heck, news out of San Jose is now on par with news out of Livermore, San Rafael, etc.  No more news cams of Plaza De Cesar Chavez or City Hall…it’s all Transamerica Pyramid all the time.  RIP “The South Bays News Channel.”

May we all rejoice in next weeks Åll Star game at AT&T Park.  The way the local media is covering the event, you’d think AT&T Park was located in downtown San Jose.  Anyhow, next Tuesday will be a celebration on what our city missed out on; or shall I say was BANNED from ever attaining.  Thanks for nothing MLB/SF Giants!

When can we subsidize a 20,000 seat/hot dog eating- specific stadium for Joey Chestnut?

Ending this post on a happier note, it’s only 19 miles from our family’s Seven Trees home to Fremont/Pacific Commons…FUTURE HOME OF THE SAN JOSE ATHLETICS!

    (God Bless Downtown San Jose)

  10. #4:

You must understand something about the illegal immigration issue…we are no longer governed by laws, we are governed by the best intentions and self-righteous indignation of those in power.  Consider: whether someone violated the law is no longer the issue.  The letter of the law is secondary to the presumed intentions and character of the law breaker. ie “These are hard working people…OR, “You can’t break up families” (stuff like that).

For those who would like the current pattern to end, you must patiently wait for political pressures (other than the rule of law) to prevail.  For example…The global warming and over-population interests might press the point that the Bay Area is getting too crowded.  Someone, someday, might question why they have to cut their water consumption by ten percent, when there are hundreds of thousands of people residing in the Bay Area in violation of immigration laws.

We don’t need a border fence.  Enforce existing laws, and make hiring someone who is here illegally a prohibitive cost of doing business.  Add to all of this, trade and development policies that will help Mexico to grow its economy and end political corruption.  (Why don’t our two governments work together to bring more prosperity to the Mexican people?)

  11. To the Bush bashers and Clinton haters, would you prefer Washington and Jefferson?  Slave owners?  Treating people like property, is that what you prefer?  Or Truman vaporizing 200,000 people?  Or Nixon creating a constitutional crisis?  Or Hoover?  Or Johnson, escalating a war with no end?

  12. Anthony,

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved dog.  I believe there was a study a few years ago in which senior citizens said they would rather have the companionship of a dog than another person. Also, I see many children filled with much joy when they are with their dog.  Sometimes I think the world would be a better place if there were more dogs and less people.

  13. 11 – Don’t know what the Hillary reference is. Must have been something she said?

KNTV has not been a San Jose news station for a long, long time. Neither they nor NBC get any mileage out of a San Jose station—it has to be a Bay Area station if not an SF station.

The less said about Chestnut the better. It became apparent this week that the Merc officially abdicated its responsibility as a newspaper when they devoted the major portion of the front page to a guy who stuffs hot dogs into his mouth. Those of us who still respect journalism lost all respect for the Merc on that day.

10 – Gonzales assassinated his own character. He didn’t need help from anyone else.

  14. Several of my friends are really angry. They feel that the rights of illegal immigrants are being pushed in their faces, and down their throats, Some of my white, and African American friends have asked me the following questions because every time they voice an opinion on the below issues, they are called racist.

Why are whites/blacks called racist when they support LEGAL immigration, and protest illegal immigration? Did everyone forget how 911 happened?

Why did they play Hispanic music during a fireworks display on Fouth of July at the Children’s Discovery Museum? It’s an American holiday!

Secondly, if you are white and you support the San Jose Police Department, why is it okay for persons of color to bash you and say,“You can’t understand our point of view because you’re not brown”?

When did reverse racial discrimination against whites become okay?

Isn’t hatred, and discrimination wrong period, no matter what color you are?

You guys have any thoughts on how to answer questions like these? I think discrimination is discrimination period…

  15. A report suggestes San Jose firefighter disabilities are rooted in poor diet – and that three out of four firefighters are overweight –  and that a Fire Capt. chairs the seven-member San Jose Police and Fire Department Retirement Plan board of directors – –

Is that like having both hands in the cookie jar?

I know… if my house starts to burn down, don’t bother dialing 911 after that comment.

  16. re:  #17 above
    re:  #12 Summer Reading…
re:  Mercury study Police and Fire disability

Full disclosure:  With close relatives in both law enforcement and fire protection and truly wanting all the best for them, I would like to think they are not ones that would “milk” the system at the expense of balanced social services and the greater good.

Maybe if I were in their shoes and not a product of a different time and the private sector, I might feel as they do.  But such is not the case.

As one that had to scratch and compete in the private sector for 50 years responsible for funding our own health care and retirement, it’s little difficult to read the results of this study without being a bit cynical and judgmental toward those who have put themselves above the greater good and personal responsibility.

  17. The new upgrades to the Arena looked nice on TV. The LED ring makes the place look much more modern. We’ll see how that translates to recouping the dollars.

  18. Nam Turk,
Acquiring an NBA team to go along with those modern upgrades will go a long way towards healing the wounds of not having a MLB ballpark downtown.  In conjunction with the NHL season, that would be another 18,000+ fans for 40+ dates per year at HP Pavilion!  God bless downtown San Jose.

(thank you for the condolences Robert in SJ)

  20. I just read in the Merc that the spay/neuter bill is being pulled. I just don’t understand why people won’t spay/neuter their pets. I do animal rescue and I’m heart sick about the number of healthy adoptable animals dying in our shelters everyday. Our city shelter killed 216 kittens last month because there was no room, and not enough foster homes to float them until they turned 8 weeks old.

71% of all healthy adoptable cats/kittens, and 56% of all healthy adoptable dogs are killed in shelters every year because there are not enough homes, or space in our shelters. It’s a real crime. I just don’t get it. All people have to do is just fix their pets! We have a low cost spay/neuter clinic right here in San Jose for God’s sake!

Are people really this heartless? Is profit really more important than the useless killing of these helpless animals?

  21. #25 – Go Figure:

You seem not to care that animals are dying by the millions in Shelters across California.  A manditory Spay/Neuter bill would save the State millions by cutting the number of animals that have to be put down every year – money we could spend on many, other issues that need our attention.  But I guess that doesn’t matter to you.  Go figure….
