More on the A’s

There’s been a lot more chatter about the A’s moving (or not) to San Jose, but you would have to look in the San Francisco Chronicle to find it. Here are some highlights (and lowlights).

Commissioner Bud Selig visited Scottsdale Stadium on Sunday and met for an hour with Giants managing general partner Bill Neukom and President Larry Baer. Baer would not discuss the meeting but hinted Selig affirmed his public stance that he will not allow the A’s to breach the Giants’ territorial rights to San Jose. “From what we could tell, there is no change in his position,” Baer said. Henry Schulman, SF Chronicle, March 16

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that A’s officials were in Las Vegas Sunday meeting with the mayor and commissioner, and the New York Daily News went as far as saying there’s talk of contraction…Wolff vehemently denied both reports. John Shea, SF Chronicle, March 17

This is all based on Lew Wolff wanting to go to San Jose, but the Giants aren’t going to support it and Major League Baseball would have to do it over their objections’ said Oakland City Council President Jane Brunner, who along with Mayor Ron Dellums, co-signed the letter to Selig. Chip Johnson , SF Chronicle, March 17

The City of Oakland sent a letter to Commissioner Selig in an effort to begin a new dialogue to keep the A’s in Oakland.

In terms of possible future negotiations, perhaps the A’s could offer to allow the San Jose Giants to stay in San Jose. (Major League teams get to dictate where minor league teams are located.) It might even make sense to invite the minor league Giants to use the A’s new stadium when the A’s are on the road.

Perhaps the Giants’ ownership team could be offered a portion of luxury box receipts and ticket sales to the many non-baseball events that would be held at the new stadium. Everybody has their price!

  1. On a blog about San Jose, this guy urges everyone to read San Francisco news.  Now, let me understand that this guy wants two teams to share a stadium.  Thats the A’s want to move, Derwood!

We just spent money to make improvements to Municipal Stadium, and this buttercup is urging that we tear it down and move the team to another stadium.

Las Vegas!!  Yeag, good one, Sherlock, so the gamblers will only have to take a taxi to make bets on the game, and maybe we can put slot machines near the hot dogs!

Why arew the letting some guy who does not anything about baseball write the baseball storie?

  2. Pete,

The giants will be paid 75 to 100 million by the A’s.  End of territorial rights story.  Pay attention to how “territorial rights issues” have been worked out in other cities.

  3. #2 You don’t know what you’re trying to talk about. Where did you read that I recommend tearing down the SJ Giants stadium?  I said that perhaps the Giants could play at the new stadium when the A’s were on the road. (The SJ Giants would play the rest of their games at Muni).

  4. #3 is right. In the end it will come down to how much the Giants can squeeze out of the A’s.

If territorial rights were a real issue, the A’s and Giants would not be on opposite ends of the Bay Bridge.

If the A’s come to SJ, they will be about 40 miles farther away from the Giants home turf. So other than the ability to but the squeeze on Lew Wolff the Giants really don’t have much of an issue. What the DO have is an opportunity.

  5. So the San Jose Giants would get to play in two stadiums?  So Pete Campbell is asking the City of San Jose to support a move where a team, who got a stadium subsidy, which I supported, should only play in it half the time, and then play in another stadium, which the city will be paying for as well?

How “out of the box” thinking is that, ladies and gentleman?

This guy gets a regular column around here?

Where does Peter get all that crack he smokes?

  6. Perhpas the A’s could let a minor league team of a rival team play in their stadium?

How about the Giants let the A’s play in San Francisco?

Someone has been kissing the Blarney Stone (oopa that’s Irish).

  7. All kidding aside, can we figure out just what Campbell is talking about?  He seems to always take the position of the zealous moderates, but makes sure that 1/10th of either side should get what they want.  In other words, it seems Campbell’s frequent position is take no position at all!

  8. I like the idea of leaving the minor league club in San Jose—-or better yet—-let SJ State buy muni and have a real park for their awesome team (at least this year).

I hope poster number 3 is right—not in terms of the money but that territorial rights will be taken care of—my biggest concern is that Bud won’t be able to figure it out and leaves SJ high and dry-

Where btw is the San Jose business community—why aren’t they putting a bit of pressure on the Giants—no sponsorship, no advertising, no luxury boxes, no season tix, until you level the playing field—come ‘on—these guys aren’t allowed “specific territory”—they compete everyday—-too bad they don’t give a s*** about what happens in San Jose—-business community (with exception of Cisco and some of the Sharks ownership group) is worthless!!  Tell me if this was an issue in Chicago, NY or Boston that it wouldn’t have already been resolved.

  9. im sick of San Fran imperialism!!! lets boycott SFgiants games!! residents of SJ can play hardball too…bring it on baby!!!!!

    YaBoy
