The San Jose A’s?

Who could blame San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed for wanting to get the ball rolling and lure the A’s to San Jose? Aside from being a economic boon for the city, a professional baseball team would certainly be a home run for the mayor.

Reed didn’t have any trouble getting his colleagues to sign off on a memo that would essentially position San Jose to be in the right place at the right time should the A’s decide to come here.

“There’s obviously a lot of interest and a lot of excitement about the possible opportunity,” Reed said during the rules committee hearing this afternoon. But Reed emphasized that it was kind of a long shot.

In a email sent to the mayor, A’s owner Lew Wolff said he wasn’t ready to start up a discussion with San Jose about bringing the team to the South Bay. After failed attempts to get the team relocated to Fremont, Wolff says he is just going to enjoy spring training and prepare for Opening Day on April 6, which, coincidentally, is one day before the San Jose City Council plans to discuss the topic publicly.

“I do not wish to seem disrespectful,” Wolff wrote to the mayor, “[but] I would appreciate you letting those who wish to contact Major League Baseball officials know that as far as I am concerned, such contacts are not recommended.”

That hasn’t deterred San Jose from attempting to build community support for a stadium and the team.

“We have the uniform hanging in the closet,” Reed said, trying his best to put a metaphoroic spin on the situation. “We’ve got to get it out and put it on. We are still sitting in the stands waiting for the call to get in the field.”
