Oh, this is really going to be fun. You get to name your own category and winner. What could be better than that? Of course, we have a few of our own. But, since we rarely wander more than a few yards away from San Pedro Square—certainly never out of sight—you may think that we are geographically challenged.

Best Bar
O’Flaherty’s Pub at San Pedro Square
Single Gal says: Just a good old-fashioned Irish pub with nice people, a great ambiance and, of course, a good pint of Guinness! Ask for Chris behind the bar to give you his special “concoction.”

Best Neighborhood with “Square” in the Name

As far as good restaurants are concerned, there’s lots of them in Japantown on or around Jackson Street. Plus there’s Gordon Biersch on San Fernando.
For too-trendy, overpriced places you can go to Santana Row.
Since I do not get FSN-Plus, where is a good place, other than at the tank, to watch tonight’s Sharks game? I live in East San Jose so I was thinking of the Brit on Almaden. Is there anything closer? Some place downtown is okay if free parking is next to it.
Also, I haven’t been to a bar in about 8 years, so what is the price of a pint of Guinness these days?
Honorable Mentions in the bar category: Trials Pub and the Hedley Lounge at the De Anza!
How could you possibly forget Original Joe’s! You are always guaranteed to run into old friends, good stories and lots of laughs. You can never go wrong with a good plate of pasta for the soul!!
Being a native San Josean, OJ’s atmosphere never changes – what a unique concept.
I suppose Henry’s Hi Life can also fall into this category. Being with old friends far surpasses “fluffy food”.
For dinner, I have never had a bad meal at AP Stump’s and for lunch, I like a vegie burrito at Muchos – both on Santa Clara St.
#4. Carol: I like your style.
OJ’s and Henry’s are local treasures. With apologies to Andrew Bales, sitting at the counter at OJ’s is sometimes the best show in town.
Add to the downtown list: La Victoria (what’s in the orange sauce?), Eulipia and Emile’s.
Some of the best discoveries are in the neighborhoods:
Johns XLNT Food in Willow Glen and Giorgios in an old strip mall on Foxworthy. Hunan Taste on N. 4th is a hole in the wall with great spicey food.
Bon Appetit in ‘07!
how about best clubs? wait you don’t like all that boom boom noise.
i’d vote for the SOFA Lounge, except they’re closing due to issues w/ capacity and the SJ fire marshall.

Hey wait a minute Mal, don’t start equating people watching at OJs with entertainment. That is a slippery path bordering on voyeurism. Degradation follows and the next thing we could see is people actually spending time reading blogs. This is just a warning but it seems the domino theory has returned.
Mr. Bales,
Obviously you don’t know the difference between running into good friends and voyeurism. You need to get out more!
