As part of its mission to encourage local dollars to be spent at local businesses, the Republican-led San Jose/Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a trip to Cuba? The Chamber Explorations program sent out a flyer advertising a nine-day, “once in a lifetime travel opportunity!” to visit the socialist island. Among the trip’s highlights is a tour of the Cathedral de la Havana, which Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier described as “music turned to stone,” which, although opposite in meaning, is similar to how many describe San Jose’s City Hall. On Day 4 of the trip, visitors will take a jaunt to the city of Trinidad, where they “will drive through the beautiful province of Cienfuegos.” No word on whether the capitalist cheerleaders will then drive north from there to visit Santa Clara (Cuba, that is) to pay their respects at the tomb of Che Guevara, or visit Parque Lenin on the rebound to Havana. The brochure advertises the trip at a cost of less than $4,000 per person, for couples, that is.

On the subject of commerce, RDA naysayers will be delighted to know that the State Supreme Court vanquished the long-abused, greasy politician/rich developer partnership called “Redevelopment.”
Three cheers for the Court, who recognized that schools and other necessary infrastructure are far more deserving of tax monies than slimy, local power grabs, which result in sterile, underutilized monoliths like DTSJ.
